Principal of the school, Veena Lala has worked at the school for five years. “At least every month, there is an accident,” said Lala
“There was a recent accident on Kelvin Drive. It was not traumatic, but the motorists involved were shaken up. The next day drivers were more cautious, but that will not last.”
Liaison officer Simon Mailula of Traffic Free Flow said a site inspection of the intersection was conducted by their project manager, Samson Ramoroka. Lala explained to Ramoroka about the problems and challenges they encountered. Ramoroka said he did not find the intersection to be dangerous.
“Most of the parents do not not use that road to drop off and collect their children. They use the entrance at Bowling Road not Kelvin Drive, ” said Ramoroka.
According to Lala, it would cost R9 000 to have pointsmen regulate the intersection which the school could not afford.
“If the school cannot appoint pointsmen, then two speedbumps could help,” she said.
The school will reopen on 1 October and another site inspection will be conducted.
“The decision will be based on the need for pointsmen on site, availability of manpower and who will sponsor the pointsmen personnel,” said Mailula.
