Mammoth sinkhole on Arkwright Avenue

A STORM water drain has collapsed and created a sinkhole on the corner of Fourth Street and Cartwright Avenue in Wynberg.

Sasol garage owner Shoayb Peer said he first noticed the damage when water flowed down the street past his premises.

Peer has taken on the responsibility of rerouting traffic towards Sandton, as Arkwright Avenue had been closed due to the damage. He has ended up directing traffic for three hours in peak hours instead of running his garage.

He contacted Johannesburg Roads Agency which said repair work would begin on 9 October, but as yet agency workers had just opened another access point for vehicles to use.

“It has been 12 days and not one person has done a single thing on site,” said Peer.

Petrol attendant, Eric Njoko has noticed a slump in business at the garage. “It is an effort to get to the garage with Arkwright  not accessible,” he said.

According to Ward 91 Councillor Andrew Stewart, Johannesburg Roads Agency would have to hire an independent contractor to fix the damage as it do not have workers qualified to fix the problem.

It is expected that a contractor will be appointed by the beginning of next week.
