Bidders gather at Sandton City for Twitter auction

An interactive Twitter auction took place recently at Sandton City.

The auction was a marketing campaign for Magnum ice cream to introduce their latest flavours.

On the day of the Twitter auction, tweets were used as currency, allowing the person who tweeted the most within the specified 15 minutes, using the selected prize hashtag as well as #MagnumAuction to claim the highest bidder title and to win a prize.

Saadiyah Hendricks from Magnum said the unique auction generated over 85 000 mentions on Twitter. “This allowed #MagnumAuction to trend on Twitter for nine hours, with at least three prize hashtags trending during each auction,” explained Hendricks.

She said more than 5 000 people all over South Africa participated in the auction with the aim to win luxurious prizes such as a scooter, coffee machine, shoe shopping vouchers, lunch with a celebrity and many other prizes were up for grabs.
