Mashatile to ‘fix’ Alex in memory of Madiba
ALEXANDRA - Alex resident and Arts and Culture Minister Paul Mashatile has vowed to 'fix' the township in the memory of the late former President Nelson Mandela, who once lived here when he first came to Johannesburg.

Nelson Mandela’s legacy of a better life for all will live on.
This is according to Minister of Arts and Culture Paul Mashatile and Deputy Minister in the Presidency Obed Bapela, who vowed to ‘fix’ Alexandra in honour of Madiba.
Speaking in Alex following the death of the former president, Mashatile said, “In Mandela’s name there shall be a better life in our lifetime. Alex must be fixed so that it can become like Soweto. Let us fix Alex, it cannot be a slum.”
He said Mandela’s former Alex home, where he lived in the 1940s, would be transformed into a heritage site. “He became a great man although he used to stay in a one-bedroomed house.”
Mashatile also praised Mandela for the sacrifices he made for South Africa and said it was important to follow his example. “We must use our power to make the lives of ordinary people better so that they can have shelter, jobs and better schools,” Mashatile said.
He said Mandela spent his life fighting oppression. “The biggest lesson is to be like Tata. Let’s try to be selfless and work for the people,” he added.
