Eurosteel toughens Dusi gold medal hopefuls

PARKMORE'S Kelvin Byres and Lonehill's Ryan Rodda tackled the Jukskei River's rapids during the Eurosteel Rumble – a training race for the world's toughest endurance canoe marathon, the Dusi.

The Eurosteel Rumble is a two-day race that attracts top paddlers from Gauteng and provides them with tough conditions for their Dusi training.

Canoeists started at Heron Bridge School and paddled towards Hartbeespoort Dam. The water levels were very low with tough, steep running sections where canoeists had to carry their canoes.

Byres and Rodda feel they are ready to participate in the Dusi in February. Byres, a project manager, has been paddling for about 20 years and admits there is no better rush than paddling down a river. Rodda has only been paddling for about a year and enjoys the partnership and lessons each river race brings. They were among the successful finishers of the technically difficult race.
