Confusion over service delivery time

SANDTON - Avril Hannah reported a burst water pipe in Sandton at 8pm and it was only repaired at 9am the following day.

When asked why Joburg Water had not responded at the time the complaint had been logged, Millicent Kabwe of Joburg Water said, “The query is still open on the system as it was logged at 8pm last night, it will be attended to within 48 hours. This is the turnaround time for a burst pipe.”

Hannah explained, “The water has been pouring down Sandton Drive from Third Avenue the whole night.” She said personnel from Joburg Water informed her that the burst water pipe would be attended to in 24 hours because that was the turnaround time for such a complaint. “What about all that water that has been wasted?” Hannah asked. “This is a complete waste. The water has been pouring for more than 12 hours,” she added.

Ward 103 councillor Vincent Earp said, “It is true, the turnaround time is 48 hours. It is very sad indeed. It is not a surprise that as a result of this policy, we lose about 34 percent of the water we pay for on an annual basis. In monetary terms this equates to about a billion rand lost. It is time for a change. A new policy and turnaround time is urgently needed.”
