Trash to treasure recycle project
MARLBORO - Pikitup has introduced its recycling project in the Malboro Depot region, which services Bryanston and other suburbs in Sandton.
According to spokesperson for Pikitup, Pansy Oyedele the recycling project is known as Separation at Source, and deals with the collection of recyclable materials.
Recycling takes place in Bryanston East, Ext 8 and 9 on Mondays, while on Bryanston Drive collection of recyclable materials is carried out on Tuesdays which coincides with normal refuse collections by Pikitup.
“Unfortunately there were some technical challenges for South Africa Waste – one of the co-operatives which collects the recyclables in the Marlboro Depot serviced areas – but this has now been resolved,” said Oyedele.
“The objective of the programme is to divert recyclable waste away from landfill sites and for the community to see their waste as treasure – hence the Trash to Treasure tagline.
“The programme not only encourages residents to recycle their household refuse, which is ordinarily tossed away, but it also promotes job creation through the exchange of money for recyclable waste. There are eight co-operatives operating in the Marlboro Depot service areas,” she added.
Some of the benefits of recycling are to create a clean and healthy environment, create jobs, save valuable landfill space, and build a recycling economy within the city and its surroundings, ensuring that our children’s children will live in a litter free environment, she said.
“Separation at Source promotes recycling and requires residents to use separate receptacles to collect their waste – a black bin for non-recyclable household waste; a clear durable plastic bag for glass, cans and plastics; and a reusable white bag for all paper materials,” said Oyedele.
