Salsa in Sandton

SANDTON- Many Sandton restaurants are hosting Latin American salsa dance evenings.

According to salsa teacher Monica Munoz, salsa dancing was almost unknown to most South Africans about 10 years ago. She said, “Salsa’s unique rhythm and fusion of traditional African Latin beats excited a few people, especially the expatriate community, and eventually reached South Africans.

“Many venues see the benefits of hosting salsa,” she added. “Classes and parties have become a popular social setting for many people looking to have fun.”

Classes are held at The Codfather restaurant in Rivonia and social dances take place at Casa de Galinha in Morningside.

“Unlike other dances in South Africa, salsa has the ability to create a social space for people of diverse backgrounds and different age groups,” said Munoz.

Salsa is the perfect opportunity to meet new people.

“It is amazing how many people have found a close circle of friends, and in some cases their life partners after experiencing this dance,” she added.

Salsa has expanded throughout Johannesburg. Salsa lessons are offered on the rooftop at Arts on Main at Maboneng Precinct.
