According to Kievman, Purim celebrates the “salvation of the Jewish people from Haman’s [an enemy of Jewish people] plot to destroy, kill and annihilate all the Jews, young and old, infants and women, in a single day”.
The festival is observed by public readings of the biblical Megillah – Scroll of Esther, and people send food portions to friends, give gifts of money to the poor, and enjoy a festive meal accompanied with a joyous drink.
The celebration will begin with a unique multi-media Megillah reading including an entertaining slide show displaying the Scroll of Esther as it is being read aloud. There will be lively music and dance. Magician Phillip Boruchowitz will entertain guests with his world-renowned illusions and tricks.
“The chef will prepare a delicious festive lunch including a braai, to satiate every discerning palate. All participants are encouraged to come in fancy dress and stand a chance to win fabulous prizes,” said Kievman.
The Purim party is open to all senior citizens and will take place on 16 March from 11.30am at Chabad House on 27 Aintree Avenue, Savoy.
