Water still runs down Ballyclare Drive

BRYANSTON - Resident Judy Collier is concerned by the excess water running down Ballyclare Drive in Bryanston.

This after the Johannesburg Roads Agency announced its programme to repair flood damage and upgrade road infrastructure in the area. Ballyclare Drive has since been allocated an estimated R751 000 for repairs.

Collier said, “This perpetual water flow contributes to the weakened state of Ballyclare Drive near the bridge.” She added that the water had been flowing out of the storm water drain from outside Bryaneven School. “This water has been running for a very long time,” she said.

Millicent Kabwe, spokesperson for Joburg Water said, “Joburg Water has requested the depot to send someone to the site to check if the leak has been attended to. If the leak is still there they will fix it.”

Ward 103 councillor Vincent Earp explained, “Sadly the water coming out of the drain is not a water leak but underground water that was diverted towards the drain and not connected. Underground water is the responsibility of the roads agency. This is a major unresolved issue. The issue has been escalated to the roads agency which has inspected the site and have told me that they are working on appointing a contractor.”

Earp explained that the roads agency said they would address the repairs needed on Ballyclare Drive from the new budget in June/July 2014. “This continual running of water has done massive damage to the road infrastructure,” said Earp. “The roads agency said that they will be laying new pipes along Ballyclare Drive from the school, where we have the continual running of water, all the way down to the river. Once this is completed and the water has been diverted, they will be able to repair and eliminate the potholes.”

Bertha Peters-Scheepers, spokesperson for the roads agency confirmed Earp’s comments. “The agency teams have inspected the site and a contractor is to be appointed for work to commence in July,” she said. “The agency will build a new storm water drain since there is currently no storm water infrastructure.”
