Sandton exercises right to vote

SANDTON - Voting stations were full of people eager to cast their vote in the 2014 elections.

Residents found their nearest voting stations and arrived with their partners, friends and family to take part in the voting process. Individual people came with books and music players in preparation of the long queues ahead, and waited patiently to reach the ballot boxes. This reporter spoke to party agents, Kristel and Rory Gaddin, and they ensured Sandton Chronicle the voting process was observed.

“There were a few hiccups at the start, but people came together and worked in a team to help the voters,” said Gaddin.

IEC officials started setting up at 5am and opened voting to the public around 7am. By mid morning, the stations filled up, and the lines moved at a steady pace. Community members and ward councillors assisted voters with questions and kept them up to date with how long the wait was.

As voters left their stations, they expressed their happiness for having the ability to vote. First time voters were all smiles and were grateful for the experience.

Senior citizens and voters with an illness were allowed to jump the queue, while born free voters spoke about their parents fight to have the freedom to vote.

Voting stations are open from 7am to 9pm, and people still in the queue will be allowed to vote.
