Sandton sub-stations in a mess
SANDTON - Many sub-stations in Sandton are enclosed by inadequate fencing and are surrounded by tall grass and shrubs.

Following the article, Substation causes major concern, week ending 2 May, Riverclub resident, Bev Richter has complained that the sub-station on Orange Avenue has been a major concern for the residents living in Riverclub Extension 1, since early last year.
“Numerous complaints were submitted as the gate is not locked, the weeds have not been removed for at least 18 months, the building needs repairs and it is infested with rats,” explained Richter. “We have had to cut the weeds ourselves due to the security and the rat problem.”
Richter said she logged a complaint with City Power on 21 June 2013 and to date, no one had attended to her grievance.
Ward 103 councillor, Vincent Earp said he was unaware of the conditions of the sub-station on Orange Avenue. He said he had reported the condition of the sub-station to Louis Pieterse’s office at City Power for their immediate attention. “I do know that City Power is very slow to clean up the environment around their sub stations,” said Earp. “Many are a fire risk especially in winter as they are not regularly maintained.”
Another resident, Ros Fichardt complained about a sub-station in Strathavon which was in similar condition to the one in Riverclub. Ward 91 councillor Andrew Stewart said, “That sub-station presents a continuous battle for me. City parks will not cut inside the perimeter of the sub-station because they say that it is Eskom’s responsibility.”
Stewart said his attempts to get Eskom to fix the appearance of the sub-station have not been successful. “I have organised for a team from Alex to cut the grass and for a general clean-up of the sub-station to take place, but it is difficult to have it done often enough,” he added.
No comment was received from Eskom and City Power at the time of publication.
