Long-term traffic congestion expected on Katherine Street

SANDTON - Traffic congestion is expected on Katherine Street in Sandton.

The Johannesburg Development Agency announced that the construction of ReaVaya phase 1C begins on 2 July between Sandspruit Bridge and West Street and will only end in March 2015.

It is also expected that only two lanes will be open for motorists travelling on Katherine Street. Motorists have been urged to use other routes to avoid being trapped in traffic.

More information will follow as it becomes available.

  1. I am so unhappy about this. I complained to Rea Vaya this morning. They said they consulted with business etc but they did not consult with the residents that are impacted by this. Let’s all stand together to have this removed. Traffic congestion in Sandton is already ridicuous, now this :-(

  2. Katherine street is a major arterial to Sandton CBD for thousands of residents living in Strathavon, Sandown Estate, Wendywood, Gallo Manor, etc. As well as the most direct route to & from the M1 & N3. It was already horrifically busy before this “development”.

The Rea Vaya construction should be fast-tracked in the same manner new corporate buildings are, i.e. 24hr construction.

If possible maintaining more lanes open during daytime hours.

The congestion is already unbearable, and of significant cost to both businesses and individuals. I wonder if the end result is worth the disruption? Or if our taxes have simply bought an expensive taxi lane?

Perhaps a better planned expenditure would be an elevated roundabout instead of the hugely abused (by right turners) flyover. Or widening the Katherine st bridge at the river
    crossing by Innes free park?
