Join experts on a Facebook online trauma chat
SANDTON - The South African Depression and Anxiety Group will host a Facebook Friday online chat aimed at helping people deal with the after-effects of trauma.
Meryl Da Costa of the group said the session would take place on 25 July at 1pm and 7pm on the group’s Facebook page.
“Trauma is an emotional response to an unexpected and potentially life-threatening event like a car accident, rape, unemployment, or violence,” explained Da Costa.
She said with the right treatment, self-help strategies and support, people could speed up their recovery, whether the traumatic event happened years ago or the day before. Da Costa said it was possible for people to heal and move on.
The group is the country’s leading mental health non-governmental organisation. “Too many people believe that only so-called big issues like rape, accidents, and death can result in trauma,” said the group’s founder, Zane Wilson. “Unemployment, a break-up of a relationship, or a diagnosis of a chronic illness can have the same effects,” she added.
The Facebook chat will be conducted by trauma experts.
