The attendant who did not wish to be named said, “Customers run away after pouring petrol, or say ‘fill up the tank’ and then when they have to pay, they say they only wanted R300.”
He explained that this was a burden on the petrol attendants. “This means the petrol attendant has to then pay,” he said. “The insurance does not pay, we pay and the owner says we must pay. We want to urge people to stop that because we suffer.”
The owner of the garage, Johannes Hansie confirmed that some motorists have left the petrol station without paying. However, he said he did not take away money from the petrol attendants. “That would be unfair, we do not do that,” said Hansie.
He said the last incident took place a month ago and he had alerted the police.
“No information has been released by the police yet, they are still investigating.”
