Police nab suspected copper cable thieves

ATHOLL - It is reported that an Atholl resident is one of five suspects arrested for being in possession of alleged stolen copper cable at a metal scrapyard in Robertville, Florida on 17 October.

@SAPoliceServices said the suspects were in possession of 505kg of stolen copper cables and that investigations were underway in order to establish if the stolen property belonged to Eskom or City Power.

@SAPoliceServices said the suspects were aged between 37 and 53. Police said, “Law enforcement officers rejected a R30 000 bribe allegedly offered by one suspect believed to be the owner of the scrapyard.” It was reported that this bribe was offered by the Atholl resident.

Police said the bribe was seized by the officers as evidence and the suspect who offered the bribe would also be charged with bribery as well as for being in possession of stolen property.

It was reported that the suspects would appeal for bail in their court appearance on 22 October.
