Little Eden, a home for the intellectually and physically disabled, looks after about 300 residents. Care centre manager Mary Hyams said they were delighted by the donation made by the pupils of Brescia House School and the wheelchairs will definitely make the lives of their residents much easier.
The wheelchairs themselves each have a story to tell, one was donated by a Grade 8 pupil who had overcome many physical challenges of her own. The second one was donated by a Brescia House School family on the death of a grandparent. The third wheelchair was earned by the school population as a whole who collected plastic bottle tops and bread tags for the High School Eco-committee and Junior School Earth Keepers Group. These bottle tops and tags were handed over to Interwaste, who then donated a wheelchair to Brescia House School for Little Eden as well.
Head of counselling and community outreach at Brescia House School Liz Norman said, “What is so important about this project was to help the pupils learn more about the society they live in and to collaborate with others in order to help someone else. It also raised their awareness and opened their eyes to the people out there who desperately need their help.”
