Unusual management style

SANDTON - Salim Shermohammed is a Sandton businessman with a different outlook on how to run a business.

He is the managing director for the sub-Saharan National Brand Development of Africa and he sees Africa as the continent of opportunity.

Shermohammed was born and raised in Pakistan and moved to the United States of America where he became involved with the business scene. He firmly believes that aligning team members to the running of the business will ensure top-form performances and ultimately better returns for all stakeholders.

He places respect and team work at the forefront of his managing style at the fast-food franchise in South Africa, Chicken Shop. “We use the word team and not staff,” he said. “Anyone who uses the word staff to refer to the workers is given a R5 penalty fee that goes into a donation jar at the shop.”

Shermohammed explained that the whole idea of the R5 penalty fee is to promote directional shift and mutual respect. “Everyone also calls each other by first name so there is no level of intimidation,” he explained. “In order to win, you need a winning team. Our customers care about our service, because our team is happy.”

He is currently spearheading his business ideals and ensuring job creation not only in South Africa, but across the whole of Sub-Saharan Africa. With over 20 years of global fast food and franchise experience, Shermohammed now plans to expand the business to the rest of Sub-Saharan Africa.

He shows no fear when approaching an opportunity or exploring an avenue in an aggressive manner. He said, “Empower your workers. Don’t be shy to let go of people who do not add value to your business. Hire slow, fire fast.”
