Former Hyde Park High pupil lauded as a national hero

HYDE PARK - In a truly heroic moment, Miro Kolenic risked his life to save a man from drowning in the Western Cape.

According to the Cape Argus, Kolenic, an animator and former pupil at Hyde Park High School, said he was walking with a friend on the Promenade when he heard screams coming from the sea and a crowd gathered close to the water, pointing.

“I heard the man shouting and saw he was struggling and [when] I saw that no one was going in to help him, I just went in without thinking,” the 22-year-old said.

It was also reported that before Kolenic dived in, another man had gone in, in an attempt to save the drowning man, but he was too slow and got to the man after Kolenic.

Kolenic said that when he got to the man, he was slowly losing consciousness, but his eyes were still open.

The man, aged 25, was then resuscitated and rushed to the Somerset hospital where he is in a stable condition. According to unconfirmed reports, there were two men struggling in the water, but Kolenic said he only saw the one man.

Kolenic has been living in Cape Town for the past four years and said he is a national swimmer.
