St David’s Marist Inanda matric pupils have achieved outstanding results in the 2014 Independent Examinations Board examinations.
“We are immensely proud of our St David’s Marist Inanda class of 2014 and their teachers,” said Mike Thiel, the school’s headmaster. “These results build on a long-standing tradition of academic excellence from St David’s matric students and reflect a commitment to one of our Marist pillars of love of work and to that of excellence from all involved in the process.”
Thiel said the school was grateful to the parents of the pupils and the extended school’s community for their support of, and prayers for, the boys throughout the year. “Although we publicly celebrate the achievements of our top boys, we are equally proud of every boy who worked diligently towards achieving his personal goals, particularly those who have dealt with personal struggles and challenges this year,” added Thiel.
This year, the school achieved a 100 percent overall pass rate with a 98 percent Bachelor Degree Pass and a total of 201 subject distinctions, including Advanced Programme Mathematics. “We are particularly pleased that 69 boys achieved at least one distinction as this points to the school’s capacity to cater to all interests and strengths and the fact that we averaged over two distinctions per candidate is also commendable,” explained Thiel.
Over half of the boys who wrote Mathematics achieved a distinction in the subject. “Special mention must be made of Jared Tumiel and Michael Symmonds on their outstanding achievement of eight distinctions each,” added Thiel. Tumiel achieved over 90 percent in all eight of his subjects including Afrikaans, English, Geography, Life Orientation, Life Sciences, Mathematics, Science and Advanced Programme Mathematics. For his tertiary education, Tumiel wants to attend medical school. Symmonds wants to study engineering or actuarial science at the University of Cape Town. He obtained eight distinctions in Afrikaans, English, History, Life Orientation, Life Sciences, Mathematics, Science and Advanced Programme Mathematics. Miguel Zenha, Thomas Hartmann and Mark Bonney all achieved seven distinctions in their respective subjects.
“These academic results crown a remarkable year for the class of 2014 who have led the school with passion and an attitude of servant-leadership and have achieved success across the spectrum of academic, sporting, cultural, service and leadership activities,” said Thiel.
“We look forward to welcoming these Marist men back as Alumni and to celebrate their successes as thought-leaders and change-makers in the future.”
