Everlasting potholes on Ballyclare Drive
BRYANSTON - Concerned resident Hugh Farrell is not impressed by the everlasting potholes on Ballyclare Drive in Bryanston.
FILLER:
Farrell said the potholes are getting bigger, which cause a concern for increased traffic due to the reopening of schools. “Road repairs do not mean dig a hole and pour new tarmac in. Rather they need a foundation that will withstand erosion from beneath and then reinforce with road material that will last,” explained Farrell. “It would help to unblock the road drainage systems on Ballyclare Drive, which are clearly seen to be blocked by builders’ rubble.”
Bertha Peters-Scheepers, spokesperson for the Johannesburg Roads Agency, said a team was onsite with permanent asphalt repairs and cleared blocked drains. “Our inspector will be onsite again checking the quality of work and ensuring Ballyclare Drive is safe for road users,” she said.
Peters-Scheepers added that as far as the bridge is concerned, traffic on the bridge has increased exponentially and the roads agency’s consulting engineers have carefully considered all the safety aspects including the standards. “They are satisfied that the bridge will withstand the new concrete barriers,” she explained.
The roads agency has also appointed consulting engineers to design a new storm water system from Bryneven School to Braamfontein Spruit along Ballyclare Drive. “Also, we are currently at tender evaluation stage for the appointment of consulting engineers for the design of the widening of Ballyclare Drive,” said Peters-Scheepers.
“We anticipate that these two projects will ensure that all water is effectively drained thereby minimising the impact to the road surface. We hope that the community is able to benefit from a quality road that is accessible, and are able to deal with the increased traffic flow.”
