Mandela Square up for major changes

SANDTON - Work has begun on Nelson Mandela Square which will be undergoing a major refurbishment scheduled for completion by the end of this year.

Media consultant for Nelson Mandela Square, Rose Mullan said, “The redevelopment project aims to restore the precinct as one of the premier lifestyle and dining destinations in Gauteng.”

Alex Phakathi of Liberty Properties which owns Nelson Mandela Square said, “Nelson Mandela Square has been trading in its current format for almost 20 years and plays an important role within the broader Sandton complex. This facelift will ensure the tenant mix and aesthetics align to that of the recently refurbished and expanded Sandton City.”

Phakathi confirmed that a number of exciting new local and international concepts were under negotiation for the revamped square. He said, “Our ability to attract top international retailers to the node is proof of the strength of the South African retailer market place and the confidence of these retailers in our economy.”

Amelia Beattie of Stanlib Property Investment which handles the asset management of Liberty Properties said, “The plan is to completely modernise and improve the aesthetics throughout the centre. This, together with new retail brands and dining options on a rejuvenated piazza area, will ensure a sustainable future for Nelson Mandela Square in a competitive market place.”

Beattie added that the square’s central location and proximity to the Gautrain, together with its renowned statue of Nelson Mandela, drew many international visitors.
