Hijacking suspect nabbed after collision on Grayston

GRAYSTON - A high speed chase between the police and robbers ended in an accident at the Grayston bridge.

According to Sandton police spokesperson, Captain Kym Cloete, the chase began just before 10am at the Norwood Mall when security personnel and Metro police spotted two suspicious vehicles, a silver Ford Ranger and blue VW polo.

“As soon as the suspects were spotted, they fled and a chase ensued in which the police also got involved,” she said.

Cloete added that one of the vehicles, a Ford Ranger, was lost during the chase but the Polo got involved in an accident with a civilian car on the bridge.

“Police managed to recover a shotgun and one suspect was arrested at the scene,” she said. Injuries were reported but it is unclear who was injured at this stage.

The suspect was charged with reckless and negligent driving, possession of an unlicensed firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition and will appear at the Randburg Magistrate’s court on 9 February.

Police are still looking for the other suspects who were using the Ranger and are appealing to the community for assistance.
