My Future, My Career programme kicks off

JOBURG - “Our children are the future, we need to prepare them to compete with the best in the world.”

These were the words of Education MEC, Panyaza Lesufi, at the media launch of the Nedbank Start my Future, Start my Career programme.

Lesufi was one of the key panelists at the launch of the education project which encourages pupils to proactively explore and take full advantage of career opportunities that exist.

He also spoke of the importance of providing quality education, especially in townships, and highlighted the importance of having programmes such as this one.

“I am keen that many learners should go through the [Nedbank] programme and we must continue encouraging this,” he said.

Martin Sweet, managing director of Primestars Marketing, the facilitator of this project, also spoke of the significance of having such programmes for pupils.

“Matric is just a beginning. At least a tertiary degree or a diploma from a further education and training college will be required,” he said.

Sweet also explained that, through the programme, secondary school pupils would be able to make use of the opportunities available to them beyond high school.

Also present at the ceremony was Dr Nonhlanhla Nduna-Watson, Aating chief director: curriculum implementation at the

Department of Basic Education, who spoke of the importance of career guidance in high schools.

Sibongiseni Kumalo, director at Regenesys Business school, meanwhile stressed the importance of developing soft skills in the country, saying that “the future demands a lot of us in terms of investing in soft skills”.

The My Future, My Career programme launch included a panel discussion with stakeholders on the importance of equipping pupils with information regarding career choices and will see a series of 14 in-depth career education episodes being aired at Ster-Kinekor cinemas nationwide.

Another screening is set to take place at Sandton City on 1 March.

The media launch took place at Montecasino on 19 February.
