The suspect was arrested at Melrose Nissan in Birnam after he was caught attempting to steal valuables from a car at the dealership.
Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela, spokesperson for the Bramley police said the incident occurred on 24 March when an employee of the dealership spotted a grey Mercedes Benz on the premises which he recognised as the same vehicle that was linked to a previous case of theft at the business.
“The employee observed the car and during this time saw the driver leave the car and head towards a customer’s white bakkie,” he said.
The employee alerted the customer and told him to ensure that his bakkie was properly locked, which the customer promptly did.
Maphakela added that the suspect then tried to drive out of the dealership’s premises in the Mercedes Benz, but staff managed to close the exit gates before he could do so. Metro police were called and the suspect was arrested. Remote gate devices, keys and a car jamming device were found in the suspect’s car.
Maphakela confirmed that the suspect was charged with possession of motor vehicle breaking implements, and was also linked to numerous crimes including five for fraud, three for theft of motor vehicle and a warrant of arrest in Jabulani, Soweto for reckless driving.
Nissan Melrose expressed relief that the suspect was finally apprehended. “This guy has been doing this for quite a while and we’ve tried various times to get him arrested without success,” said the dealership’s parts and services director, Mike Grobler. “But we hope he won’t be allowed to get away with this because he will keep doing this.”
The suspect has since appeared at the Randburg Magistrates’ court.
