Levin said he noticed the leak on 20 March and was troubled when he discovered that the taxi drivers based at the Sunninghill taxi rank have been stealing the water to wash their vehicles.
He said, “I was wondering where all the taxi drivers were getting water to wash their taxis. I initially thought they were taking it out of the river.”
He added that he soon found out they were stealing water from a leak near the rank.
On 23 March, Levin lodged a complaint to Rand Water regarding the issue citing the massive amount of wastage as a primary concern, but as of yet he has received a reference number but no response.
Media relations specialist at Rand Water Pride Mguli said the leak is not under Rand Water’s jurisdiction and Joburg Water needs to fix the problem.
As of yet, Joburg Water has not given a response pertaining to the cause of the massive leak and when the problem will be resolved.
Ward 93 councillor of Annette Deppe, who has been dealing with the problems surrounding the Sunninghill taxi rank, said she was unaware of the leak and advises residents who notice these problems to contact their respective ward councillor to escalate any issues they have in their area.
Levin concluded that there has been no action from any government agency to fix the leak.
