Spokesperson for Joburg Water, Millicent Kabwe said they always leave sites the way in which they found them.
“We leave the site where work was done in the condition that we found it in or closest to it. In the case of pavements, we sometimes cannot get the exact material but we always look for something close to the original,” said Kabwe.
Kabwe’s response followed complaints from the general manager of Sunninghill Community, Rob Kimmings.
Kimmings alleged that Joburg Water employees cut down a tree that was blocking a sewerage pipe in Sunninghill but left it lying across the street. He added that when a resident confronted them for an explanation, they promised to return the following day to remove it. He said that was never done.
Kimmings also said the site is at the top of a park where children walk, and it is littered with condoms. Turning to the issue of litter, Kabwe said residents must log a call with Pikitup. She said Joburg Water does not remove litter found on site.
She, however, said Joburg Water will investigate the circumstances surrounding the litter and the abandoned tree.
