Empowering young women

SANDTON - The Maslow Hotel was the perfect setting for empowering young women when non-profit organisation Womentality hosted its annual conference on 9 May.

The organisation was established in 2013 by former Miss South Africa Melinda Bam and business partner Anja van Zyl, and runs a series of workshops and conferences around South Africa in an attempt to educate young woman on dealing with everyday challenges.

A portmanteau of the words ‘Woman’ and ‘Mentality’, co-director of Womentality Anja van Zyl said, “It’s all about our thoughts and how we translate that into our reality and how we plan our future.

“I think the core concept is that we look at womanhood with a holistic view… and we try to educate from that sense.”

The conference gave young women from all around Johannesburg including students of the University of the Witswatersrand the opportunity to attend talks from various speakers who touched on a wide variety of issues surrounding womanhood.

A group of 100 disadvantaged young women were also given the opportunity to attend the conference with the support of Pretoria-based organisations Business 4 Initiative (B4I) and Business for Empowerment Trust (B4ET).

Thuthula Ndunge, trustee at Business for Empowerment Trust said, “The B4ET and B4I have a vision to empower black woman and children and to enable exposure, particularly for black females towards initiatives aimed at black youth leadership development, like Womentality.”
