Motorists to prepare for lane closures in Sandton

SANDTON - THE road developments taking place at the Grayston Drive interchange and on Katherine Street in Sandton will require the closure of multiple lanes.

This according to Siyabonga Genu from the Johannesburg Development Agency who explained that construction on the Grayston Drive pedestrian bridge, which crosses the M1 Highway, officially commenced in May and will continue for 18 months.

“This will require the closure of the slow lane shoulder in both north and southbound directions of the M1 about 300 meters from both sides of the existing Grayston Drive bridge,” explained Genu.

“In addition, the fast lane shoulder in both directions will be closed for a distance of 100 meters on either side of the Grayston Drive bridge.”

Genu said short-term lane closures would be needed for the placing of concrete traffic barriers to close off the shoulders.

“These will be at night time between 10pm and 4am,” added Genu. “Further lane closures will be necessary for the erection of the bridge construction support works, but again, these will be limited to between 1am and 4am.”

However, Genu stated that despite the closures, the impact on the travelling public should be minimal.

Construction on Katherine Street over the M1 highway has commenced. “This will require the closure of the fast lane shoulder in both directions on the M1 for a distance of 100 meters on both sides of the existing pedestrian bridge located between the Marlboro Drive and Grayston Drive interchanges,” explained Genu.

Genu also said the fast lane closures will be for a period of 18 months leading to February 2017.

“There will also be short-term lane closures and contra-flows on weekends for demolition of the existing bridge and erecting a temporary bridge as well as erecting temporary supports for the new Katherine Street Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit bridge,” added Genu.

Short-term carriageway closures, including contra-flow, will be required and will occur over weekends. These will take place on Saturdays at 8pm and on Sundays at 10pm and may continue to take place over several weekends. Genu said fast and slow lane closures will also be necessary between Saturdays at 6am and on Sundays at 10pm.
