Leeuwkop inmate’s suicide confirmed
KYALAMI - The death of an inmate at Leeuwkop Prison in Kyalami on 15 July has been confirmed as suicide.
This was affirmed by spokesperson for Gauteng Correctional Services, Ofentse Morwane. The spokesperson said the inmate, who was serving a 41-year sentence for two counts of murder and pointing a firearm, had received numerous psychological interventions.
Morwane said, “An investigation has been instituted which will confirm the exact cause of death. Our records indicate that the offender was seen by the Correctional Supervision and Parole Board on the 11 May. He was given a further profile date of 11 November. The following day he was admitted at the Charlotte Maxeke hospital for attempted suicide.”
Morwane concluded, “In terms of our records he was seen by a psychologist on 14 July 2015. While incarcerated, the offender had received numerous interventions from the local psychologist as well as a social worker.”
