Dust from construction work in Kelvin causes distress
KELVIN – The dust rising from a construction site in Kelvin has caused great health and environmental concerns for residents living in the area.
Concerned resident, Raheel Muhammad said the low-cost housing construction taking place on the corner of Southway and Olympia roads has caused him and other residents living in the area distress.
“The owner has been digging up the earth and piling it higher than the boundary walls between our properties causing continuous dust in our home and escalating our allergies,” explained Muhammad.
“We have been struggling with postnasal drips, throat infections, sniffing and coughs.”
Muhammad also said he has tried to contact the police and the Department of Environmental Health with no success. “I have been transferred from pillar to post,” he said.
Celiwe Mtebula from the City’s development planning department said the site in question has been approved for construction by the City. She added that the department would investigate.
No comment was received from the Department of Environmental Health by the time of publication.
