Preliminary report on Bridge Collapse released
SANDTON - The Department of Labour held a press conference on 28 October where they released the preliminary report surrounding the tragic M1 collapse which took place on 14 October.
The conference was headed by acting director general at the Department of Labour Aggy Moiloa and chief inspector Tibor Szana. According to reports Moiloa confirmed that Murray and Roberts were contracted to build the bridge. She confirmed that as it stands, 19 people have been injured including three who are in a critical condition.
Moiloa said that the formal inquiry will focus on the client’s responsibility, in this case the client being the City of Johannesburg.
Chief inspector Szana added the Department of Labour is currently not “pointing any fingers” at a particular party as the inquiry is still to follow. Szana was unable to confirmed the possible cause of the collapse.
He added that the department will follow section 32 of the Occupational Health and Safety act which states that a chief inspector may appoint an inspector to conduct a formal inquiry.
Szana said that the investigation will be done by the Department of Labour and will look for any other parties who would be able to assist during this period. He added the investigation may take up to six months to complete.
