The series will feature four choirs performing the composer and his contemporaries’ works – the Synagogal Ensemble from Berlin, the Johannesburg Jewish Male Choir, the Soweto-based Imilonji KaNtu Choral Society and the Lewandowski Chorale.
Adam Golding, musical director of the Lewandowski Chorale, explained what the series would offer audience members. “Lewandowski was an absolute master of melody who combined traditional Jewish music from Eastern Europe with the popular romantic style of classical music; he understood the human voice and the blending of the voice [and] the result is a staggering use of harmony,” he said.
Golding added that, while the majority of the series would include music by Lewandowski and his contemporaries, other genres would be also be featured, including African liturgical music, Jewish baroque music and a variety of others.
The concert will take place on 16 March at Redhill School and will start at 8pm.
