Daphne Moyo has a passion for her job as a barista, and at the age of 45, is now passing on her skills to her daughter, Abigail.
Moyo has been working as a barista for 15 years and a few years ago she entered a barista competition hosted by Mugg and Bean. She competed against the best and most experienced in South Africa and won the competition. Besides incredible bragging rights, she took home R15 000.
Moyo’s manager, Kelvin, said she goes above and beyond the call of duty and that the hard worker knows exactly what regular customers want and has their coffee order completed before they have even placed it with their waiter.
Moyo said her family is very important to her and that her children, two daughters and a son, are what keep her motivated.
Abigail wants to follow in her mother’s footsteps, and her mother has decided to train her at the Sandton restaurant where she works. Recently, Moyo spent a few hours showing her daughter how to make cappuccinos, Americanos, lattes and other hot drinks. One such order was as follows … one skinny cappuccino, one decaf cappuccino with not too much milk, two ordinary cappuccinos, one cappuccino with whipped cream, one decaf latte with extra milk and one shot of espresso.
Moyo’s advice to all those in the restaurant business is to always smile. She concluded that making her customers happy makes her the happiest barista in the world.
