David Potter has been a DA councillor of Ward 102 since 2011.
He describes the suburbs in his ward as ‘vibrant with a variety of sports and recreation facilities, a Central Business District with mixed residential and business nodes’.
Ward 102 encompasses suburbs within the Randburg area namely Blairgowrie, Bordeaux, Ferndale, President Ridge, Willowild, Hurlingham Manor, parts of Bryanston, Fontainebleau, Moret, Malanshof, Ruiterhof and the Randburg CBD.
Potter has been involved in community work and civic affairs similar to that of a councillor but without the official title and responsibility since 2001.
Potter said, “I love serving the residents in my ward and we recently launched the Look and Log campaign in 2013 to get residents to express their issues in the city.” He is urging residents to ‘look and log’ and escalate issues to their ward councillors.
Potter will be standing again for the 2016–2021 term of office and is encouraging all residents to vote. He feels very strongly about all residents making their mark during the elections and noted that in 2011, only 6.5 of every 10 registered voters came out to vote. “This is not satisfactory,” he added.
“One of my successes in Bryanston was the fact that Peter Place Road was resurfaced. Furthermore, there has been an upgrade of the Sandton Drive and William Nicol traffic signals to increase both commuter and pedestrian safety. I have worked on championing various intersections across the ward to ensure traffic mobility takes place. I also worked on the billing crisis between 2010–2013 on behalf of many councillors in the city.”
Potter said there was a lot of room for improvement in many areas. “JRA [Johannesburg Roads Agency] has failed to attend to many issues. Also, the Department of Education owns a piece of land in Lyme Park on Brian Road and they have not cleaned or cut the grass for many months,” he said.
