Caring green fingers

SANDTON – The community around Ullmann Park and Sandspruit River are working on the park and river to make it a friendly and safe environment.

Syd Land, chairperson of the Sandspruit Ullmann Park Conservation Association (Supca) is heading up an operation with community members around the Ullmann Park and Sandspruit River region to turn the park and river area into a friendly and safe environment for all to use and enjoy.

“The association has started clearing the alien and invasive bushes and trees from the river and park areas. This has not been done for years, despite there being a government law which compels local authorities to do so,” said Land.

He further explained that the association is accredited by Johannesburg City Parks to work in the area to assist City Parks in improving parks and rivers.

A significant amount of hard, green effort has gone into the work that the association is doing in the area. “We will be covering the Sandspruit River areas from Ullmann Park through to South Road in the south including a large portion of the park. The grass will be regularly cut, paths will be maintained in a usable state and many indigenous trees will be planted.

“A comprehensive programme to replace many of the alien trees over a planned period will be implemented together with the help of City Parks tree experts.

“We will also be creating grass areas which will not be cut and will be allowed to grow naturally to attract small animals, birds and insect life.

“Supca will be holding various events during the year, including a river clean-up on 17 July to celebrate Mandela Day, family fun days, walks, bird lectures and other functions for the community.”

He highlighted that the association needs as much assistance as possible from the community. “In order to be able to do all the above, we need to raise funds. Some members of the community have already committed monthly amounts. We invite members of the community to join our association and contribute any amount from R50 per month.”
