Julie Hillary, Sandton City’s general manager said, “We were delighted by the generosity of Gauteng residents who dropped off their clothes, shoes and other items on a daily basis.”
The shop was situated at the Checkers Court in the shopping centre and the concept gave shoppers the opportunity to donate clothing, as well as accessories, children’s books, games and toys to a very worthy charity. All of the items donated had to be in good condition. Local celebrities such as actress Chantal Stanfield, TV and radio personality, Jen Su and the Miss South Africa 2017 semi-finalists all heeded the call to donate.
The centre’s tenants came to the party and made generous donations which included quality goods and designer clothing. Europa Art donated 10 pairs of designer shoes; Democratic Republic donated a designer dress; Stuttafords donated 17kg of clothing; Pringle of Scotland donated 88kg of clothing and Queenspark donated 100 items.
The Empty Shop in Sandton City, a partnership with McCann Johannesburg, has collected 13.6 tons of clothing over a three-year period and in doing so set world records for the highest quantity of clothing donated.
