Johannesburg Central Police arrested two suspects for common robbery on the corner of Klein and Noord streets on 3 January.
According to police spokesperson, Captain Xoli Mbele, it is alleged that two suspects robbed a 31-year-old man. The victim was allegedly approached by the two men, one of whom strangled him while his accomplice searched him and took R80 from his pocket. Police in an unmarked vehicle apprehended the suspects at the crime scene and the money was immediately recovered.
In another incident, Johannesburg Central Police arrested two suspects for armed robbery and assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm, at the corner of Diagonal and President streets, also on 3 January. Mbele said the two suspects allegedly robbed a 28-year-old woman at the corner of Sauer and Albertina Sisulu streets. “The victim was coming from work when she was confronted by two suspects,” he said.
“One of them pointed a firearm at her while his accomplice searched her. They took her cellphone and R80 before they fled the scene.”
He said police were busy with their routine crime prevention duties when they saw the victim walking on the street looking disturbed. “The officers then asked her if she was fine. She told the police that two males had just robbed her and she pointed them out.”
Mbele added that the police apprehended both suspects immediately and the woman’s cellphone and money were recovered. They also confiscated a toy gun.
Mbele said investigations were continuing for both cases and the suspects will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court soon.
