The Belgrave low-water bridge poses a safety risk when flooded, but new upgrades will make it safe for all road users.
Ward 103 councillor Vincent Earp met with Joburg Roads Agency (JRA) representatives and Riverclub residents to give feedback on progress made on repairs, including two solar streetlights that illuminate the signage leading up to the bridge. Earp also requested that emergency booms be installed for when there is flooding.
“We have discussed the installation of booms at either end of the bridge. JRA has agreed to supply the booms, which will be controlled by CAP Security. It is important to note that these booms will not be used for security purposes but purely as a safety measure during heavy rainstorms,” said Earp.

These safety upgrades were requested because a number of cars had tried to cross the bridge while it was heavily flooded. Vehicles had been washed off the bridge in the past, even when the water level looked safe.
According to the Bryanston Riverclub Community Forum, a good rule of thumb for all users of the bridge is that when water is flowing over the middle (the lowest point) of the bridge, you should not cross.
