Invitation to light a candle for Ahmed Kathrada at Liliesleaf Farm in Rivonia on 1 April

SANDTON – All South Africans are invited to light a candle at Liliesleaf Farm in Rivonia this Saturday in remembrance of struggle icon Ahmed Kathrada.

South Africans are invited to light a candle for struggle icon Ahmed Kathrada at the historic heritage site Liliesleaf Farm in Rivonia on 1 April from 11am.

Kathrada, who died earlier this week, was arrested at Liliesleaf Farm in July 1963, along with seven other leaders of the liberation movement.

A modest and self-effacing person, Uncle Kathy, as he was affectionately known, epitomised the core meaning and essence of the South African struggle for non-racism, justice and equality.

Nicholas Wolpe, chief executive officer of Liliesleaf Farm said, “Although he has passed away, his voice and message will never be forgotten. Great leaders never die or fade. We invite everyone to honour, commemorate and reflect on the life and times of this iconic and much-loved struggle stalwart.

“We will be lighting candles outside the historic thatched cottage where Uncle Kathy was arrested more than 50 years ago.”

Entrance to Liliesleaf Farm will be free.

Liliesleaf Farm is located at 7 George Avenue, Rivonia. Guided tours will be charged at regular rates.
