Cyril Ramaphosa Education Trust gives young learners education opportunities

CHISLEHURSTON – The Cyril Ramaphosa Education Trust has helped over 100 learners since its inception.

The Cyril Ramaphosa Education Trust (Cret) will be helping over 100 learners to get an education this year, and strives to assist youngsters who have potential.

The trust, which forms part of the larger Sandton-based Cyril Ramaphosa Foundation, was formed in 1996, although it was far more informal than it is today. Ramaphosa wanted to help young learners to get an education and provide funding for a few of them.

Chantelle Oosthuizen, the executive director of the foundation, said, “It all started out of Cyril wanting to help students. He used to be approached, and he still is, by a lot of people who would like to go to university. Then he saw an opportunity whereby he was asked to do a lot of speaking engagements, and so he started charging for the speaking engagements and put that money aside to send children to university.”

Oosthuizen added that while it had started as a small project, it had grown wonderfully since then.

“We run a family; it’s a family foundation, so when you’re taken on as a bursary student you become part of the Cret family.”

She added that while she believes there is enough funding to ensure that learners can get a tertiary education, it is important to provide them with the necessary support. The trust also focuses on a holistic approach to education to provide learners with skills and opportunities they wouldn’t necessarily gain at university.

Further, the trust encourages learners to give back, and an alumni fund was created to enable them to do this. Oosthuizen said that many people see the name of the foundation and assume that there is plenty of funding, however, the organisation always encourages more corporate funding.
