Makhubo replaces Parks Tau as Joburg ANC leader
JOBURG – The decision was made at the party's regional conference.
The African National Congress’ (ANC) Joburg caucus has a new leader.
The ANC’s regional conference at the start of the month saw Geoffrey Makhubo elected as its chairperson, effectively taking over former mayor Parks Tau’s position. Tau currently chairs both the South African Local Government Association (Salga) and the South African Cities Network.
The party’s provincial body congratulated the regional leadership collective, saying they have been mandated to champion the implementation of ‘radical socio-economic transformation’.
The elected regional office bearers also include Eunice Mcina as deputy chairperson, Dada Morero as regional secretary, Loyiso Masuku as deputy regional secretary, and Mpho Moerane as treasurer.
The party said the appointments showed a diverse leadership collective with a mixture of experienced and younger members.
“Delegates discussed, among other key issues, better ways of implementing resolutions of the ANC’s 54th National Conference,” it said.
Joburg’s regional spokesperson, Jolidee Matongo, told Randburg Sun that the reason for Tau’s omission was of no concern.
“Tau is still a councillor in the City of Johannesburg. We have put him forth as a candidate for the provincial executive committee,” he said.
