UPDATE: Water is restored after many Sandton suburbs go dry

SANDTON – Water has been restored to areas affected by the water outage, is this the end?

Several suburbs in Sandton have been without water for about five days. It now seems that water has been restored to all areas.

“I spent the whole morning with the Joburg Operations and councillor MartinWilliams, in Parkmore. We concentrated on the top portion close to the business district of Parkmore, between Lilian street and Helena . We met some residents and heard their frustrations. We found some Valves closed. Once opened the water flow to residents and business started up again.  Parkmore now seems to have water,” said ward 103 councillor Vincebt Earp.

UPDATE: 20 July 10.30am

Johannesburg Water would like to advise residents of Region E, specifically those serviced by our Zandfontein depots that the labour impasse between Joburg Water and its employees at the depot has been resolved. The two parties met and they were able to come to a resolution.
Standby teams will be resuming work this evening and all teams will resume work as normal tomorrow morning.
The dispute has caused suburbs to be without water for days.
Isaac Dhludhlu, communications manager for Johannesburg Water said due to the labour dispute at Zandfontein depot, their service teams did not go out and, as such, it had an impact on service delivery.
Dhludhlu said that the areas still without water will receive roaming tankers and there is no estimated time for repairs for areas still affected by the outage.
Regarding the valves that were found to be turned off due to alleged tampering, Dhludhlu said they cannot verify the culprits. “The contractors appointed are still busy checking the valves in all affected areas.”
Certain areas in Parkmore are without water this morning possibly due to a burst pipe on 8th Street.

UPDATE: 2pm on 18 July

Ward 90 councillor Martin Williams said that although there had been claims of sabotage by striking workers these are being treated as not proven. Williams added that the lengthy outage has been distressing to many residents and he and Vincent Earp, the councillor for ward 103 have been inundated with complaints. However, cannot provide an estimated time of restoration.

Dhludhlu said they are also experiencing a standby labour dispute at the Zandfontein Depot and it may have an impact on service delivery turnaround times after hours.

“This only affects the after-hours operations and not the current problems that are being attended too.”

He said that there are two teams on standby by from 4pm till 10pm, one for water and one for sewerage who operate on after hours calls.

“Contingency measures have been put in place to attend to queries after hours through private contractors while the matter is being attended to by the Employer and the Labour Unions.”

He said turnaround times will be impacted as the contractor’s teams don’t know the area very well and customers are urged not to let anyone into their properties.

“We urge communities to report suspicious activities around Johannesburg Water infrastructure by sending the information to the Call Centre on 011 375 5555.”

He said residents are also urged to continue to report all burst pipes, leaking water meters and open hydrants.

Several residents have been left without water since yesterday:
