UPDATE: #JoburgStorm causes havoc for road users, trees yet to be removed
JOBURG – One tree was reportedly struck by lightning.
A summer thunderstorm hit the Joburg northern suburbs resulting in closure and partial closure of multiple roads yesterday evening.
Reports have surfaced of blocked roads, broken trees, and flooding on 14 January.
An old tree reportedly fell over after being struck by lightning on Cumberland Avenue and Grosverner Road in Bryanston as well multiple others.
Ward 104 councillor Mike Wood said that there have been a number of fallen trees reported since the storm.
Update: 12.30pm
Wood said that most of the trees have been taken off the roads, but there is a backlog at City Parks.
“Most of the trees will still be on the pavement,” said Wood.
Vincent Earp, Ward 103 councillor said the fallen tree in Parkmore has been removed and he has received no further complaints from residents.
The South African Weather Service has once again issued a warning of severe thunderstorms that are expected to hit Gauteng this afternoon between 3pm and 9pm.
Other reports have stated that a large number of roads were affected, namely:
- Robyn and Karbiet streets, Joburg North
- Hornbill Road, Christo and Asbes avenues in Juksei Park
- As well as Jacaranda Avenue in Olivedale
