The City of Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba‘s vision to turn the City of Gold into a ‘construction project’ will soon begin to see the light.
The approval for the release of 84 buildings by the city council last year saw this mission gain momentum. “After a rigorous tender process, two developers were successful in their bids to revamp three buildings in the inner city,” said Mashaba’s spokesperson, Luyanda Mfeka.
Mashaba will visit these three buildings, part of 84 properties earmarked for redevelopment, on 24 January.
Mashaba will be joined by City manager Ndivhoniswani Lukhwareni, MMC for the Department of Economic Development Leah Knott, MMC for Development Planning Reuben Masango, Johannesburg Property Company chief executive officer Helen Botes and other critical stakeholders where the developers will be presented with tender certificates.
“It is envisaged that these 84 buildings will deliver an estimated 4 000 units for student accommodation, small business premises and even more affordable accommodation for some of our poorest residents,” added Mfeka.
