Redhill School commemorated Youth Day with its annual Youth Festival.
The festival saw about 20 schools competing against each other in netball, hockey and rugby. Each year the festival is hosted in honour of the 176 victims of the Soweto youth uprising on 16 June 1976.
The festival began on 14 June with the first session of hockey games. The following day, after a performance by the senior marimba team, the festival continued with the opening ceremony, during which the learner heads of the school delivered the Youth Day address, read poetry, the Captains’ Pledge and A Prayer for Hope and Peace.

The ceremony concluded with a commemorative offering of 16 white roses on the side of the main rugby field and the singing of the national anthem, led by Joseph Gerassi, the executive head of the school.
The principal of the high school, Dimitra Adramitoglou, said, “The Youth Festival was a spectacular success – not only because we hosted close to 20 schools on one day, but also because it was a true celebration of the spirit of our youth. It was both humbling and encouraging to witness the diversity, knowledge, strength, empathy and grit of all the students taking part.

“These future leaders of our country definitely have what it takes to bring about reform and change to create equality and make Africa a better place for all. We can’t wait to do it all again at next year’s festival.”
