Slow start for voters during the Ward 109 by-elections
MORNINGSIDE – Party representatives hope that the voting stations will get busier once people finish work.

Voting got off to a slow start during the Ward 109 by-elections on 24 July.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) is fighting to retain control of the while the African National Congress (ANC) and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) hope that their ward councillor candidates will be elected.
Ward 109 includes areas of Morningside Manor, Wendywood, Kelvin, Eastgate and Marlboro. The by-elections are necessary to elect a new ward councillor following former ward councillor Werner Smit’s resignation in April this year.
Voting stations opened at 7am however party representatives at the Ernest Ullmann Recreation Centre agreed that the voting station had been fairly quiet during the morning. They were optimistic that it will pick up as people finish work.

Ward councillor candidates include Liaquad Alley Mohamed Ebrahim from the ANC, Sabatin Mhlaba Shongwe from the DA and Molatelo Patricia Mofokeng from the EFF.
The voter turnout for the ward in the 2016 Municipal Elections was 53.82 per cent and the DA candidate won the ward with 50.45% per cent of valid votes.

Voting stations at the Ernest Ullman Recreation Centre, Wendywood High School, Marlboro Gardens Combined School, Nokuthula Centre and St Johannes Lutheran Church will be open until 9pm.
