Bryanston High crowned Apcan Schools Rugby Series champions

BRYANSTON – Bryanston High School U18 rugby side have been crowned champions of the Apcan Schools Rugby Series.

Bryanston High School U18 rugby team was crowned the 2019 Apcan Schools Rugby Series champions following a 14–7 victory over Christian Brothers College (CBC) Boksburg in the final on 7 September.

The competition was made up of 26 teams with the teams divided into four pools.

Bryanston convincingly won all four of their opening Pool C matches against Hoërskool Adelaar, Nic Diederichs Technical High School, Glenharvie Combined High School and Hoërskool Wonderfontein.

Led by coaches Wian van Wyk and Brad Wright, the boys from Bryanston were undefeated in the tournament.

Nic Diederichs was the first team to taste defeat at the hands of Bryanston as the game ended in an entertaining 38–10 win in favour of the champions.

The second game saw Bryanston take on Hoërskool Adelaar. The encounter started at a slow pace with both teams adapting to the conditions and it was Hoërskool Adelaar who crossed the line first for a converted try. Bryanston found their mojo as the game progressed and they overturned the 7–0 deficit and converted it into a whopping 45–7 victory.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, Glenharvie Combined couldn’t honour their fixture against Bryanston and the match was forfeited, granting the champions an automatic win. Hoërskool Wonderfontein was the next team hoping to end Bryanston’s good run of form when the two teams locked horns on 2 September, however, Bryanston thumped Wonderfontein 47–7.

Speaking to Sandton Chronicle Van Wyk reflected on the final. “The boys took time to settle. We started a bit sloppy and I had a quick chat with them after that and they raised the intensity.

“Overall I’m happy with how the boys performed in the tournament and we’re really looking forward to the 2020 season.”
