De Jager happy with Gallor Manor pipe replacement progress

GALLO MANOR – MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services Nico de Jager is impressed with the progress of pipe replacements in Gallo Manor.

MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services Nico de Jager embarked on a walkabout on 11 September in Gallo Manor. De Jager inspected the progress made so far with pipe replacements, while Joburg Water engineer Polite Mogolola provided an update on how the construction has been going.

The project commenced on 27 February and is expected to be completed on 27 September. According to De Jager, the replacement of the pipes will ensure that the number of burst pipes per kilometre and blockages per kilometre is reduced which will lead to improved levels of service to consumers in the City.

Joburg Water will instal 3km of 110 and 160mm diameter pipes in Gallo Manor. This will also include excavation, pipe laying, erf connections and backfilling through a labour-intensive method. Mogolola said the pipe replacement in Gallo Manor is well on course. “We have made progress so far and it is coming alright, we haven’t experienced any challenges.”

Mogolola also acknowledged Gallo Manor residents who have been cooperative during the construction. “We work together with residents and we alert them in time if there will be any distractions or drilling taking place,” he said.

Part of the pipe replacement process in Gallo Manor includes the installation of new valves on fire hydrants which will help manage water flow during a pipe burst, De Jager outlined the importance of new valves. “If there is a water outburst, residents can close the valves and the water will rotate around in a different way and the isolation will only be on a smaller space.
