Developing artists to share their work at Jazzy Joburg Market
JOHANNESBURG – The Member of the Mayoral Committee for Economic Development, Leah Knott invites members of the media on a walkabout of the Jazzy Joburg Market at 2pm on Friday afternoon, 27 September 2019.
The Standard Bank Joy of Jazz – in partnership with Joburg Tourism and the Nelson Mandela Square – has created an outstanding opportunity for developing artists to share their music and talents at a fun-filled Jazzy Joburg Market to take place at The Square in Sandton from 27 to 29 September.
According to a released statement by stakeholder manager of the office of the MMC, Kgopi Mabotja said that the three-day musical market was started in 2018 with the likes of Nelisiwe Sibiya, Aus Tebza, Sobantwana, Zano, Vuyo Tyolo, the Standard Bank National Youth Band and the Dutch band – The New York Round Midnight Band.
“Joburg Tourism will be utilising The Standard Bank Joy of Jazz to partner with SMMEs for the second edition of the Jazzy Joburg Market. This is where the market comes together with jazz to give visitors a great welcome to Joburg – reinforcing Joburg Tourism’s #Welcome2Jozi campaign, which aims to emphasise the city’s positioning as more than a stopover destination,” said Mabotja.
The Member of the Mayoral Committee for Economic Development, Leah Knott invites members of the media on a walkabout of the Jazzy Joburg Market at 2pm on Friday afternoon, 27 September 2019. “It couldn’t be more appropriate that the Jazzy Joburg Market walkabout coincides with the UNWTO’s World Tourism Day, celebrated globally every year on 27 September, especially in light of the fact that the 2019 theme is Tourism and Jobs – a better future for all.”
Mabotja said that World Tourism Day was started by the UNWTO in 1980. This particular day was selected as it was on this day that the laws of the UNWTO came into force in 1970. This is considered as a major landmark for the global tourism industry, as it aims to make people aware about the significant role of tourism in the international community – as well as illustrating how it impacts social, economic, cultural’ and political values.
“In spite of all the challenges we face in growing our tourism numbers on an ongoing basis, we are encouraged by the growth in visitors to Joburg,” said Knott.
“Gauteng demand performance statistics for 2018 indicate a growth rate of 7.4 per cent (from 2016 to 2018) which is a total of 3.8 million visitors,” said Knott. This is in line with the Mastercard Global Destination Cities Index which has ranked Johannesburg Africa’s most visited city since 2013.
The market will be open from 3.30pm to 8pm (Friday and Saturday), and on Sunday from 10am until 5pm at the Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton. The Jazzy Joburg Night Market is the daily build-up to the main Joy of Jazz Festival taking place on Saturday night at the Sandton Convention Centre – with food stalls, arts, and crafts exhibitors and all the trimmings to be expected from a night market in a creative space; an outstanding opportunity for developing artists to share their music and talents at a fun-filled night market.
“We are thrilled to be hosting the Jazzy Joburg Night Market with our partners – what a way to showcase our diversity, musicality, talent, art, and food!” said festival producer and general manager of T-Musicman, Mantwa Chinoamadi.
Chinoamadi added, “We want a fun way to ease music lovers into the main jazz festival, while still enticing those that are indecisive about buying their festival tickets. The artists we have on the line-up are all accomplished, dynamic performers who we are determined to build relations with for future shows. We encourage everyone to come and have a good time at the market; it’s a friendly, welcoming environment for all.”
